Akaroa is fast becoming well known as a tourist destination. It's about 84 kilometres or one hour and twenty minutes by road from Christchurch on Banks Peninsula. The town sits at the head of the beautiful and sheltered Akaroa Harbour (Akaroa means "Long Harbour") and is surrounded by the hills which, along with the harbour, were formed from an old volcano.
The French established a settlement in Akaroa in 1840 and the town continues to hold a French influence in many ways, including the many place names.
